At You Can Play, we believe that every athlete, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves the right to compete and belong in a supportive environment. Allyship Week is all about showcasing the power of inclusion in sports and encouraging everyone to step up as allies.
Changing the Conversation
Sadly, homophobia in locker rooms and group chats is still a challenge. Part of being an ally means speaking up, even in the smallest of moments. Here are a few simple ways to address hurtful comments with humor and confidence:
"Are we still doing this in 2024? Wild."
"Guess we’re not doing locker room talk anymore, huh?"
"That’s the best you got? Thought we evolved."
"This vibe isn’t it. Let's be better, yeah?"
"If we’re all here for a laugh, there’s way better material than this."
By addressing these moments in a way that calls out harmful behavior without escalating the situation, we can shift the culture towards greater respect and inclusion.
Throughout Allyship Week, we will be highlighting the incredible efforts of teams, athletes, ambassadors, and partners who are committed to fostering inclusion in sports. From professional players to youth coaches, these allies are standing up to ensure that everyone feels welcome and supported. Be sure to follow us on social media to see their stories and learn how you can join the movement!
Together, we can ensure that sports are a safe space for everyone—because if you can play, you can play.
