What are the extents of trans athlete bans?

What are the degrees and extents of different trans athlete bans?

Most bans restrict participation on women’s teams to exclude transgender women. Some policies may allow for participation after a certain amount of time undergoing testosterone suppression has passed. Some, but not all, of the policies also restrict participation on men’s teams to exclude transgender men. Other policies allow anyone to participate on men’s teams, regardless of sex assigned at birth.

Transgender athlete bans exist at all levels of sport, including the interscholastic, intercollegiate, recreational, and professional levels. However, there is no universal transgender athlete ban that impacts all sports at all levels. Different policies and bans affect different sports at different levels. For instance, the state legislature participation bans primarily affect K-12 and/or secondary education, depending on the state. Within collegiate athletics, the NCAA revised their policy as of February 6th, 2025. The updated policy allows for anyone, regardless of sex assigned at birth, to participate on men’s teams.

However, women’s competition is restricted to those assigned female at birth. The International Olympic Committee has revised their policy as of March 26, 2026 to restrict competition in the women’s category to athletes who were assigned female at birth, evidenced by the SRY genetic test. Most International Federations and National Governing Bodies of Olympic Sports updated their policies to reflect the IOC policy, so it is relevant for any athlete competing at the professional level in an Olympic sport. Private club and recreational teams, as well as some leagues, establish their own eligibility criteria and do not necessarily follow the above bans.

It is always important to check with the rule-makers for your sport and the level you are competing on. For more information on who makes the rules for different levels of sport, see this blog.
