De-Escalation Guide

What To Do When a Homophobic Situation Gets Escalated:

Identify the Problem:

  • Overt

    • "F*g", "f*ggot", "d*yke", "tranny"

  • Casual

    • "that's so gay", "fairy", "sissy", "homo" etc.

  • Cheering

    • chants using terms

    • "stop playing like a pansy"

Take Action:

  • Speak Up

    • "Easy up on the language."

    • "Choose a different word."

  • Inquire

    • "Care to elaborate on that?"

    • "Is there a problem here?"

  • Refocus

    • "Anything else you'd like to get out so we can get back to the game?"

    • "We'll talk about this later. Right now, cool off, and focus."

Ensure Everyone's Safety:

  • Make sure the person is safe

    • Some people will laugh it off, some may not be able.

    • Engage with the person directly, as if they are alright, and if they feel ok to be left alone.

  • Talk to your team

    • Answer any questions they have

    • Reiterate your team's values, policies, codes of conduct, and expected behavior.
